Because the US allows a passport card to be used for entry from certain neighboring countries. In essence, instead of forcing you to carry a big passport every time you cross from Arizona to Mexico xxxxxxx, you can carry the drivers license size card. For frequent travelers to and from Mexico or Canada, the passport card is a welcome alternative to passport. As a bit of history, the passport card and rules for use are over a decade old.

My experience in Algodones, Mexico....just walk in. However, leaving, you go thru US Customs. Have your passport.

In Michigan and some other border states you can get a Enhanced Driver's license. It can be used when crossing Canada and Mexico borders. If your resident is a state that does not offer enhanced driver license. Best to have a passport.

Going to Progresso is not a problem. Never had to have anything. However, coming back into the states you need a passport. Otherwise you will be made to wish you did.

Just get a passport. It will be much easier.

They may sometimes accept and use other documents, however you may also be delayed for an extra length of time while they check everything out. It will be much easier and faster with your passport.

Just get your passport already.
