Philadelphia by Motorhome

I'm looking for advice on doing Philadelphia by motorhome. Looking for places to park and ideas for navigating the city. We are planning on being in the city on Sunday July 5. Will need place to stay the evenings of July 4&5. We aren't towing a vehicle. Thanks in advance for the advice.
  • If you stay at Timberlane, you should be able to get into Philly via the PATCO train, or via taxi. Once you're in the city, the South-Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA - www.septa.org) can get you anywhere you want to go. You can purchase a pass that allows you to ride the entire system for a day, or a weekend, or a week... Buses, subways, regional rail trains, elevated trains, trolleys, etc. Philly folks are friendly enough and will help you get where you're going. They'll even provide suggestions for things to see and places to eat.
  • I have stayed here before.. www.timberlanecampground.com

Decent place nice people. One of the closest places near philly.
You might be too late for the dates you want.
When you call to see if they have any sites left I am sure they can tell you the best way to get into the city via public transit.
    Good Luck!
  • Thanks for the feedback so far. We have a 35' class A. Doesn't sound like I'll be driving it into the city. Any suggestions on best ways to get into town? Is there any public transportation? Any other advice? Thanks all.
  • The closest CGs to Philly are probably the ones in Jackson, NJ (near Six Flags Great Adventure). If you don't have a toad, that can be a bit of a problem. You definitely don't want to be driving a MH around in the city. Public transportation in the city is excellent, provided you can get into the city in the first place. If you can locate a CG (or hotel) that's near one of the regional rail stations, you'll do fine. SEPTA's Regional Rail radiates out from the city like spokes on a wheel. I live just north of Philly, and there really aren't many places to RV around here. Best of luck!
  • I would NOT take a Motorhome into the city... The city sponsors the Freedom America Festival , it is an 8 day festival. When I need to get into town on a normal day , I WILL NOT take my 1 ton... I take our smaller car , or the train.
As far as campgrounds go , there are NOT a lot to pick from , try the KOA in West Chester which is about an hours HARD ride into the city.
  • You do not state the size of your MH. Philly is not very RV friendly. Also, because of it being a holiday weekend there will be many organized activities and center city will be very crowded and congested with people and traffic. I do not know of any parking lots where you can park that would be close to the tourists' attractions. There are a few campgrounds in NJ and in PA outside of the city. Hopefully, someone more familiar with the city can provide you some better information. Philly is a mecca for history lovers; I hope you enjoy your visit to Philly.
