Never been to Pie Town, but I'd recommend you check out El Morrow NM. Such a cool place. And it's been a crossroads for a couple thousand years. Hiking trail, ancient ruins, a small dam, graffiti that was put there by the Spanish in the 1500's.
I really loved my short visit and hike up to the top and back down. Really worth the visit. Best of all, you can combine the visit to El Morrow, with a visit to Pie town. Only a 2 hour drive.
