We just returned from a week in the Smokies, it was our first visit and we enjoyed it very much.
We went into Pigeon Forge once to visit friends......that was enough for us! Not run down but the biggest tourist trap on earth! Can't imagine why anyone would want to stay anywhere in that hectic city, but to each their own. Driving through it was enough to experience it.
When we wanted the touristy stuff and dinner in town we went to Gatlinburg. It was smaller, 2 lanes of traffic compared to 5, more pedestrian friendly and right next to Ober Gatlinburg, which my kids enjoyed tremendously.
