Please school me on something

What do snowbirds do once you get to your winter destinations? I've never spent months at a time on the road or at a specific location in the motorhome.

I've looked at some of the activities offered by some popular destinations, and I can't see that holding my interest beyond a week or two.

Aside from sitting outside and taking advantage of the warm weather, what do you guys/girls do on a daily basis to fill your days?

  • We do at least a month in Vegas until it gets too cold (low 40's at night 60 day time high) then head south to Palm Springs. Do the opposite when it gets too warm. If you have to ask what's to do in Vegas and Palm Springs you better have someone check you for a pulse.
  • Education is always an option. Either by distance learning or local campus. What interests you. What have you always wanted to learn about. Everybody has their own thing but there is lots to choose from. When I semi-retired 11 years ago I spoke two languages and was iffy on history and geography. Now I speak read and write comfortably in 4 languages and continue to be fascinated by history, culture language and geography. (really all four tie together nicely). I am a wealth of completely useless information. :) The internet is a huge resource for the on the road full timer bunch like us. Carrying on a conversation with someone in Germany, Costa Rica or French Polynesia is literally a mouse click away. Ask yourself what interests you, do a little digging and see what resources are out there.

    Enjoy and happy trails.
  • Because you asked to be schooled, and I'm all about painting all sides and not just the "rainbows and sunshine" side (since you or others might be planning on making a lifestyle change.)

Some blossom into social butterflies, others become healthy after years of neglect, some pursue interests that they always dreamt of, others become loud and take on the attitude of "been there done that", some start to drink more then the recommended limits, others just continue their lives like nothing has changed.

Both have their merits. Being on the road every day is a new mini adventure. New sites, new sounds, new smells, new diversity. It takes money to be on the road and traveling in style. We never get bored when we're on the road. If I could afford it we would be on the road all the time in a huge RV staying at five star resorts :)

Sitting in one spot in less then 350 square feet the quality of your life will be directly connected to that location and the weather. You can control the location to an extent, but not the weather. Rule of thumb is the better the location the more it costs. Not always, but it is no different then anything else in life. It's cheaper to sit in the middle of no and where, or a parking lot with FHU, just not very fulfilling for some of us.

That makes two of us. I think for RV snowbirding to continue, the way these parks are setup will have to change. YMMV

That's a little bit of a problem. When the weather is bad you do get bored unless you are into those park activities or have a small foot print hobby (i.e crossword puzzles, reading, etc...) When you have a S&B you can have big footprint hobbies (woodworking, auto repair, sculpture, etc...) In a RV that simple is not the case. I enjoy big foot print hobbies so its a problem for me. DW on the other hand enjoys her small footprint hobbies on rainy days.

Now when the weather is good that's a different story. I'll fall back on the old retiree thing of "didn't know how I had time to work." Each day I wake up not knowing what will occur, only to find out that it's supper time. That time is filled with all the things that got said prior to this post and so much more. It will be different for everyone. I will say that a big part of it is the community of these parks. Even something so simple as walking the daily garbage to the can may take an hour or even all day. From visiting with someone, to "hey you guys want to go to Mexico today?" This is something you will never get in a S&B environment and can't be explained.
  • I get this question all the time and it kills me.

I've been retired nine years and sometimes there aren't enough hours in the day to do what I want.
I do what I want when I want.

    Ditton X2.

There are all types of CG's you can choose from for Snowbird season.

There are the ones that you are crammed in like sardines but they have EVERY activity you can imagine going on every single day to keep you busy from woodworking classes, crafts, dancing to book reading clubs!

Many RV'ers like that and the CG becomes their new community of friends they see every year like back home and trust me the CG keeps you busy ALL day and night if you desire.

    or

Just find a CG with bigger sites near an area that you can go sightseeing every day and where interaction with other campers and activities is a bit more low key.

I've done both and like the later.
Less stress of having constantly doing something as a group. That's just me and when I get bored I pull up the levelers and just move on down to another town. :C
  • We rarely stayed put for more than a week or two.

We tried staying put a couple of times but after a month we had itchy feet and had to go......we hit the road to travel.

We have friends that go to one place and stay the winter. For them it's about the 'community' and interaction with other snowbirders. They go out as a group, sightseeing, restaurants, shows/festivals, get together around each others rigs--telling stories......just enjoying life in an alternate setting.

Why do some people go on cruises, why do they go metal detecting, why do they go hiking, why do they go to musicals,,,,,,,why-why-why.
    Because it's what they enjoy.
Ain't life grand that folks can do what they get a kick out of!!
  • You mean I have to talk to my wife? Where's the adventure in that?:W
