Please tell me about Iowa

I am a southwestern girl, but I am planning a month long tour of Iowa in 2014. I think I want to go in September. Trying to avoid tornado season and hot humid summer. But please, tell me everything there is to know about RV/camping in this State. Best time of year, best places (we like lots of space, very quiet and we do not mind no hook ups. I was looking at the State Parks, can't tell if they are nice or not, routy, busy, or are folks kept in line? Everything you can tell me will help me plan my dream vacation, so thank you in advance for all the advice you can give me.

  • Iowa City is beautiful. Between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids near Kirkland, is an impoundment of the Upper Cedar river. Great fishing. South of McGreggor on US 10 are some nice campgrounds with scenic kayaking and canoeing streams along the Volga River State Recreational Area. In the northeast corner, Effigy Mounds is a great place to hike and explore. Amana Colonies, Council Bluffs, all great spots. Have fun. It''s not all corn corn corn.
  • Stop in Winterset, Iowa. It's where they filmed "The Bridges of Madison County". There are eight covered bridges, seven of which are within bicycling distance of town.

A great rv park in the city park for $17 a night FHU. Very quiet, corn field out the front and typical mid America town with a town square with city hall and court house in the town square. Dime store, drug store. VERY friendly people. We were going to spend one night and stayed a week.

It has a world class aquatic center that was packed all day, every day.

Winterset is also the birthplace of John Wayne.

A nice, neat, clean, friendly, prosperous little town well worth seeing.
  • You could watch the corn grow but September would be toward the end of the season. My favorite time is in June. If you listen carefully you can almost hear the corn popping up through the soil.
  • Heard one awhile back. Do you know why birds fly upside down over Iowa? There's nothing to******on.
  • Don't know how you can spend a month in Iowa...Try Dyersville's Field of Dreams. Take a paddleboat ride on the Mississippi.
Do a Google search for `Iowas tourism' and read on.
How about combining Iowa with Minnesota?
  • The State motto should be "The wagon broke here so we stayed".

I spent a month there on week.
  • Ottumwa, the home of Radar O'Reilly of MASH :)
Late Sept should be a good time to see the fall colors.
  • At exit 201 on I80, there's an exit sign that just says "What Cheer". I couldn't resist. 20 miles later I found the answer to the question. Not much. Just a regular small town like 1000's of others. Hope I didn't ruin it for you. :)
  • Is a month in Iowa really your "dream vacation"???
