As noted, Yellowstone is very busy in September. Maybe not so many kids, but plenty of gray hair. ;)
If you're taking the I-84 route, a couple of CG's we like to use on the way:
Farewell Bend SP on the eastern end of Oregon.
Massacre Rocks SP between Twin Falls and Pocatello ID.
