They are out early, do not step over a stone or log, instead stand on the stone or log and always have a walking stick, before stepping down hit the stone or log and put the stick where you plan to place your foot, if there is a snake it will either rattle or strike.
When walking with brush on side of trail, swish the stick side to side to create vibrations on the brush, also stomp once every so many steps, snakes do not have ears, they sense vibration and sample air scents with their tong, when they sense a big vibration they high tail it out of there.
Be very careful with your dogs, they do not sense the danger at all, and small children, never lift a stone from your side, always lift in such a way that if there is a snake, gila monster, scorpion, or other dweller the stone protects you and gives you time to jump backwards.
