I like Hamlin Beach, probably closest state park to my house. You are a good 35 to 40 minutes from downtown. Electric service was upgraded a few years ago. Sights for real big rigs are slightly limited imo, so book early if that is your situation. About the biggest downside to me is around dusk in the summer the breeze usually does away to nothing, and since the campground is pretty wooded it can get a bit smokey. The beach itself is hit or miss. Usually plenty of area, but they will close down certain sections to swimming due to water quality issues. Seaweed ripped off the shoals by storms can build up and make a mess. Really depends on wind direction and what not. Our kids have always had fun in the stuff though!
While I have never stayed there, Webster Family Campgrounds is much closer and looks nice on paper http://www2.monroecounty.gov/parks-webster.php
Probably a 45 minute commute at least, but Letchworth State Park offers a lot more sightseeing, views, hiking, etc and is one of my favorite state parks.
