Reavis Ranch, Superstition Mtns.

The "Hermit of Superstition Mtn." Elisha Reavis (1827-1896)is/was a cousin. I have the dreaded genealogy disease of "I gotta walk where they walked". Looking at the location east of Phoenix, there is the Lost Dutchman State Park and some campgrounds around Lake Roosevelt. Is anyone familiar with these? I believe the state park stays full all winter so I will likely just boondock a couple days around the lake. I would like to hike up to the Reavis ranch site so winter is best. Anyone by chance that has hiked Reavis Trail, I would really appreciate advice.

  • All great info. I'll dig into the several trails and decide what CG would work best for whichever trail seems easiest. I'll do this trip in the cabover so an overflow or boondocking site will be fine.
Lost Dutchman SP does look good.
    Thanks to all.

I stayed in site 127 in the overflow section last March, dry camping, but a great view of the mountains out my back window:

  • I'd highly recommend Lost Dutchman State Park. It's a beauty. (We've volunteered there).

There are also some very nice forest service campgrounds on Roosevelt Lake. Cholla is our favorite. It could be too long of a drive for you though.

Not far from Lost Dutchman via the paved section of Apache Trail are a couple campgrounds - Tortilla, Tonto Nat'l Forest and Canyon Lake.

Have you looked at the HikeArizona database? Put Reavis into the search box at top. This brings up a list of half a dozen trails, with maps, triplogs, etc.

    Happy trails!

Thanks for the info. I've seen some basic mentions of the trails but the writings were mostly centered on the man, who was quite interesting. I'll dig in that site.

  • Haven't hiked that trail but have stayed at Lost Dutchman. They take reservations.
