We've taken that trip a few times in the past, and taken an occasional day trip when in the area. My personal suggestion is to stay in one of the private campgrounds on the 101. There are plenty. Then tour the side road of the Redwood Highway in the car. It's two lane with many curves, although none are really tight. But there are many roadside scenic spots where parking could be a problem, especially if there is a crowd. Places like the drive thru tree, the Mystery garden, the Redwood travel trailer, and dozens of craft shops make it a fun tour.
Happy Trails.
