This Pacific Northwesterner opines that if you skip the Oregon Coast you'll be missing one of the most beautiful drives in the U.S.A.
Hwy 101 hugs the ocean from Seaside to the California border and is dotted with the best State Parks in the Country. (Nothin' shy about this former Oregonian ;) )
And take it from me- there ain't much to see along that really long stretch of I-5 I think I see on your map from Centralia to Grants Pass or so.
If time constraints are a factor, I'd skip Mount Rainier, which looks like the only thing in Washington State on your agenda. I can't tell from your picture exactly what highway you're taking north to Mt. Rainier, but where that road hits the Columbia River you could go west to Portland- at which point you're actually on the old Oregon Trail! I-84 along the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area Link is another fantastically beautiful drive, also dotted with Parks. At Portland, heading west along "the Sunset Highway" for eighty miles lands you on the coast; and you could see much of it and cut over to Crater Lake at Coos Bay.
Just a (radical) thought!
