RGV --- Rock Pecking Windshield on Freeway

Does everyone else get rock pecked a couple of times a year down here in the McAllen area? Seems like after every little rain, small pebbles are left on the freeway, or in treads of tires, and get slung at me like a rifle bullet. I literally get at least one a month. My insurance agent is complaining (though I use the plastic fill thing if I can) and threatening to go up on insurance.

Don't suppose there is any good solution?
  • I called a windshield repair service here and he said insurance allows 3 peck fill repairs per year and that rates should not go up. A couple of years ago I had a letter from my agent espressing "concern" that I had two or three windshield incidents. Maybe he was just bluffing, maybe I shouldn't be such a loyal supporter of State Farm. I give them roughly $2500/year on all my policies, and have never had a major claim, even skipped roof replacements in the stick home when I could have screwed them.

I used to be an engineer. Seems to me some enterprising young fellow could develop a clear plastic outer coating for windshields that would be crack resistant. Looks to me like the economics are certainly there. What? Are you all watching TV and drawing unemployment? Get to work. Invent something!!
  • 10 Winters in the Mission Texas area and they only got me once and we are on the expressway about 4 days a week. I must be Lucky.
  • There are two kinds of windshields in Texas. Those that are rock chipped and those that are going to be!
  • We have been in Mission for the past 5 winter seasons. We have replaced four windshields. If you look at the local vehicles, 75% of the windshields are cracked. It is very frustrating but that is the way it is down here. Travelling on the Expressway is like driving in a NASCAR race. If you get your fender past the car, you can dive in. Or, if they don't move along fast enough, fly by on the right.
  • I have had two window chips in the last ten years and over one hundred thousand miles all over the country. Both were on the Expressway between Weslaco and McAllen. I don't see any way to prevent them as fast and close as we travel down here.

Your TX Ins. rates have already factored in costs of windshield repairs.
It's a fact of life and not just in TX.
Tell your agent to pound sand.......if rates go up, find another Ins. Company. Fact is one should check rates yearly.

There isn't anything you can do about getting chipped windshields.
  • Just count the number of crack windshields (with Texas plates) in the upper RGV. I think you'll see it's about 3 out of every 4 cars.
