road ramblings

hello - we just got back from a 3500 mi. plus trip to washington from orange county,ca. and would like to ramble:
my 2013 f150 (v8) did well - no problems towing a 2013 24 ft. keystone hideout travel trailer.
hwy 5 through stockton,ca was horrible - road conditions and just a bad wind day.
hiway 99 in oregon from eugene to mcminnville was great driving and also in and around oroville, ca.
hiways 41/46 in central california were fine
some great parks you might want to stay if you haven't already:
7 feathers in canyonville, or
durango in red bluff,ca
olde stone village in mcminnville,or
fairview rv park in portland, or
koa in oroville,ca
wine country rv park in paso robles,ca
phoenix rv park in salem, or
the travel trailer did well for 46 days on the road - everything worked well - still debating whether to have the gas on for the fridge while traveling.
overall a great trip and now planning for the next one - i have three weeks in xmas time - looking at phoenix/scotsdale, az - or san diego area ( east or coast) - finally - has anyone been to ely, nevada - looks intriguing.
any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
  • Anytime is a good time to visit San Antonio.there is always something worth coming for.
  • If you have time off at Christmas, go to San Antonio for a different look at Christmas. Call 1-800-8888-TEX and ask them to send you a map and book. They also have additional books on camping in Texas, State Parks, National Parks. No I don't work for the state, just a proud Texan who would like to have everyone enjoy the state.

A good central location to stay at would be Hill Country RV in New Braunfels, TX if you want to be able to travel between San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos and Austin since you have a trailer. At Christmas time in San Antonio they have certain places to go to for a ride on a bus to the Riverwalk that is cheaper than parking and the traffic to get there.

If you want to be in the downtown area, go to CarefreeRVResorts.com where they have a park in downtown San Antonio near the Riverwalk. They have different festivities almost every night. There is 12th night, Fiesta that is about 10 days long. Look on the web site for San Antonio visitors and convention center.

If you are active or retired military, Carefree RV Resorts has a 50% discount - except for certain days. There are also camp grounds north of San Antonio at Canyon Lake - civilian and military. Also, the RV park at FT Sam is nice and so are the off post/base at Canyon Lake - Army and Air Force have parks there.

In Austin is the Lone Star RV Resort, that is an old KOA camp but part of the Carefree group. They also have Treetop RV in Arlington, TX that is near Cowboy Stadium, Six Flags, etc. They have one on Lake Carrollton too.

On IH-35 in San Marcos are 2 outlet malls with over 150 stores. Then there are several in Austin and in several cities on IH-35 going north to Dallas or Fort Worth.

Austin has the State Capitol, several museums, state cemetery, and much more.

Waco has the Dr Pepper Museum, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame (not the ball team), etc.

Dallas has the Mesquite Championship Rodeo, lots of neat things in downtown Dallas, museums, etc. The Dallas Zoo.

Fort Worth has numerous museums, zoo, the Stockyard and Rodeo, etc.

It all depends on what you want to do. When you drive in to Texas, there are numerous cities with unusual things to see and do depending on if you are arriving via IH 20, IH- 30 or in the Panhandle on IH-40.

I'm forgetting the boot places in El Paso where you pass thru if you are traveling on IH-20 or 30. Some people say you can get custom boots made.

I'm not a hunter or fisherman, but the Texas Parks and Wildlife's web site can tell you what is available when, etc, and also the camping available at the state parks.

Come on out to Texas for a visit. Don't be surprised if you come back often or decide to move here.
  • triple j - would love to go to san antone but when is a good time of year? grand canyon is amazing -we liked the circle pines koa in williams as a base camp for grand canyon/flagstaff/sedona. early spring is a nice time, not too crowded.
double e - i think the hideouts are good all around trailers- our 24 footer maneuvered around some tight spots, yet was very comfortable and homey for the wife and I and the small dog.
our total miles were 3701 at an average of 12.4 mpg, according to the apps on the truck.
  • Glad you had a great trip around my old stomping grounds--OR and Northern CA. Also good to hear the Hideout did well. We "stepped down" from an Arctic Fox fiver to a small Hideout and I've been a little nervous about the quality.
  • All your post did was make me jealous. My longest trip was from San Antonio to the Grand Canyon. Can't wait to take a long one!
