Route into Yellowstone

We have reservations for Yellowstone next May. We will be coming in from the east on I -80.My questions is,what is the best route into the park pulling a 27ft trailer.Map quest suggested this route but don't know if it is trailer friendly:Merge onto E Cedar St/I-80 Bus W/US-287 N/US-30 Bus W via EXIT 215 toward WY-789/Rawlins.


9. Turn right onto 3rd St/I-80 Bus W/US-287 N/US-30 Bus W. Continue to follow US-287 N.

US-287 N is just past 2nd St
1880 Coco's Restaurant is on the right
If you reach 4th St you've gone a little too far

10. Turn left onto US-287 N/WY-789.

11. Turn right onto State Highway 789/US-287 N/WY-789. Continue to follow US-287 N.

US-287 N is 0.5 miles past Three Points Rd
If you reach the end of Calvert Ln you've gone about 0.5 miles too far

12. Turn left onto US Highway 26/US-26 W/US-287 N. Continue to follow US-26 W/US-287 N.

    From Robesonia, PA to Madison campground in Yellowstone there are two direct routes:

    1. I-39 Wisconsin to I-94 to Billings, MT to I-90 to Livingston, MT to 89 south through Yellowstone to Madison. This is 4-1/2 days @8 hr/day for 2160 miles.

    2. I-90 across MN and SD to Cody, Wyoming coming in from the east entrance to Madison campground. This is 4-1/2 days @8hr/day for 2120 miles.

    I-90 is a more pleasant drive than I-80.

    Of course, there are many other routes depending if you want to stop any particular place along the way.

    I would highly recommend you also stay at least a few nights in Grand Teton Nat'l Park, also. It is completely different from Yellowstone...perhaps doing it on your return.

    Coming out of PA on I-80 head down to Columbus from Akron (I-71) getting off I-80 toll road to I-70.

    Next follow 70 to Indianapolis straight through to I-74 to Champaign out of Champaign on I-72 to Hannibal then Rt 36 across to Boulder/Denver Colorado this will put you back on I-70 eventually just outside Denver. Why all these different roads you ask – Less trucks – Less Traffic – More fun (did I mention you miss Chicago and have NO TOLLS).

    If you had followed it this far you might think maybe yes maybe no – but trust me just a little more – as usual with big cities DO NOT travel in rush Hour! – on I-70 just after down town get off on exit 265 to Rt 58 follow this to Rt 6 into the mountains for a beautiful drive along Clear Creek all the way to Idaho Springs and I-70. Now follow I-70 through the tunnel to Rt 9 exit 204 Rt 9 follows the Blue River all the way up to Kremmling and Rt 40 and the Colorado River. Now follow Rt 40 to Vernal stopping to see the Dinosaur NM taking Rt 191 to/by Flaming Gorge to I-80 then on into some more Rt 191 into Jackson up through the Tetons and on up into Yellowstone.

    Not only is this a fun drive but you will not get bored driving through the fly over states. Now if you have a little more time there are many –many stops along the way.

    No that’s how I come into Yellowstone.

    A little easier to follow is to go to Rawlins on I-80, turn north at the first entrance and take the right at the stop light. When you get to the end of the by-pass, turn right and go to Three Forks and take a left to Lander. About eight miles from Lander is a Junction, take a right and go to Lander and through on Main Street, drive to Dubois, turns are well-marked, up over Togwotee pass and down to Moran Junction, about 53 miles from Dubois. Enter Grand Teton at the South Entrance and, if you don't want to take a look at some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, just keep going to the South Entrance to Yellowstone, about 45-50 miles away. We have been doing this trip through Lander for about 50 years and I get lost when trying to figure out the highway numbers. Whatever you do, enjoy your trip and do take some time in Grand Teton, it's much prettier than Yellowstone but doesn't have near as many features.

    yep, x2 very easy dropping in from the North. and you don't have to go across Nebraska on I-80 with the trucks.

    We did similar trip. Departing from Cleveland, out on I-90
    Night 1: Wisconsin Dells, WI KOA
    Night 2: Albert Lea MN KOA
    Night 3: Mount Rushmore KOA (spent two nights there)
    Night 4: Yellowstone National Park - fishing bridge

    Return trip:
    Depart YNP South entrance
    Night 9 Colter Bay - Grand Teton
    Night 10 Colter Bay - Grand Teton
    Night 11 Devils Tower KOA
    NIght 12 Bandlands KOA
    NIght 13 Toma WI KOA
    NIght 14 back in Cleveland

    Ditto on the Cruzer research. I followed his recommendations, came in from the East entrance to stay at Fishing Bridge. We came out from Ohio and followed his path, we had no problem with our rig.

    I just entered Yellowstone from Cody WY US 14/16/20.

    This road is driven by all types of vehicles with much longer trailers than yours. Tour Buses and Tractor trailers. My trailer is 33 overall. This is a fine road. NO Problem.

    Also it is one of the more scenic routes into the park.

    Currently the road from the northwest entrance (Gardiner/Mammoth)into the park is under construction and the delays can be horrendous. Avoid it.

    I also entered the park this year at West Yellowstone. It is easy yes but the least scenic. And if you are coming from the east there is no reason to go all the way around.
