What about the North Rim of the Grand Canyon? Not as far as California, nice and cool, lots of great boondocking out in the Kaibab National Forest. Great mountain biking on the Rainbow Rim, good hiking. Real quiet, too. A fine place to just kick back and listen to the wind in the trees.
