Rules in Yellowstone CG's

Would like to find out before we get there.

We normally carry and use a propane fire ring in place of a wood fire, also use a small charcoal grill for all our grilling, are these permitted in the campgrounds? If so... The charcoal grill I normally dump into the firepit and when cool put it in a plastic container in the back of the truck bed which is covered with a Tonneau cover, is that permitted? I saw somewhere that everything used for cooking has to go into the trailer.

  • We stayed in West Yellowstone at Grizzly RV Park and the town of West Yellowstone did not allow any campfires. What I did was while I was in grizzly bear country I covered my grill on my stove with aluminum foil, so there was no food buildup on the grill. I then stored my grill in my TT compartment at the campgrounds.
  • YNP rangers are very serious about anything to do with outside cooking and eating. If you leave a cooler out or picnic supplies or a grill, they will swoop in and confiscate it unless you are eating or actively moving to get them contained. And then you get fined! We had a ranger stop in front of my camper to make sure I was putting all our stuff away properly and he didn't leave until every last thing was secured.

If you don't have a place for your grill, see if it will fit in one of the many steel bear boxes. I'd be a little leery about put a yummy smelling grill and leftover ashes inside my truck bed. Bears can easily open trunks and car doors to get to food. I would think a truck would be only slightly more difficult for a determined bear.
  • A camper wondering about rules before arrival!!

You make my campground host heart beat with happiness.

    Have a great time.
  • All cooking utensils are required to be secured after cooking. It's part of the bear policy.
  • Depends on fire danger status
At the highest, nothing with an open flame
At the lowest, wood fires in established locations are fine.
Generally a propane "fire" is fine.
  • We were just in Teton NP and Yellowstone.Campfires are allowed in designated fire rings and charcoal grills must be placed in the fire ring or on top of the grate. We saw people using propane cook stoves that were placed on picnic tables or on top of fire ring grate. I can't help you with the propane campfire. Have you checked NP online?
