Thanks to all the responses on this request. We stayed in Mt. Vernon, then across on RT 20 to Newhalem State Park...great spot. Up to Diablo lake, Washington pass...beautiful roads and scenery. Down to Carlton, watch for the detour due to road washout. Stayed on rt. 173 and the 17 to Spokane. Tourist spots for tons of photos and dam tours.
