Both areas are great to visit. I prefer Ocean Lakes with an ocean front site, just my personal preference. I have been down there 8 times over the years and I do not bring a toad. Only once, did I get thru the week without a car. There is plenty to do right at the CG, BUT, its still nice to get out to see the sights.
You might consider renting a car for a couple days. At Myrtle Beach, places like Broadway at the Beach and downtown MB are worth visiting. Great places to eat and shop at.
Your driving that far to visit. It would stink to find out after your trip that you missed out on something worth the visit. Enjoy your trip. You will have a great time regardless what you decide.
