Sorry about your friend. It won't be a very pleasant trip for you. However, you could stay in pleasant surroundings.
I'd suggest Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction. They have some full hookups, pull-thrus and big sites in a gorgeous setting. Depending where you need to visit in Chandler/Gilbert it would probably only be a 20-30 minute drive via the 202 and time your visits to avoid rush hour. If your friend can use a wheelchair it would be an awesome place in nature for some peace and a short outing to visit at your place - don't know if that would be possible or not.
