RV sites near Baxter State park

I know there is Katahdin shadows and Mattawamkeag wilderness, are there any other good ones? Really would like to see some Moose this time lol. Starting out in Acadia and ending up near Baxter I guess. Any tips on where the good Moose action is? Preferrably without having to take one of those moose finding tours. Did it before.

We camped in Katahdin Shadows the one time we were up at Baxter, probably 15years ago, and it was a nice place in a very scenic/peaceful area. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

We camped for 4 nights there, saw a few Moose only once, while we were hiking around a pond. It was just random- we thought we'd never see one either (first 3 days, no luck at all).

Sorry I didnt respond earlier, working 80 hours a week and I get side tracked but I did check it out. Any recommended spots in there?
  • Sorry I missed your reply. If you are really adventurous, "Big Pleasant Pond" (site one) is my first choice. 18 miles in on well maintained logging roads but maneuvering into the site is a bit of a chore. But it is well worth it! Site two is easy to get in, but not as scenic.

An easier haul is "Little Joe Mary Pond". Easy in and out, only about six miles in. PM me if you would like some more detailed info!
  • Thanks for the info. I already booked Mattawamkeag wilderness park campground but I'm gonna check those out when we are cruising around for next time. I hate going in blind lol. Appreciate the info!
