I spent a couple of winters in San Benito. Most of the crime I remember was theft. So I would stay in a campground that was fenced with a gate and secure the car good when near the border. Car theft was big. Also when visiting Mexican towns right across the border I would go in groups or into area where the are a lot of other visitors. Don't go wandering off by yourself too far. Those Mexican towns were interesting and fun to visit.
