We cross 2-3 times a week and have never been asked that question. I can not remember ever having to state what we are leaving in the US in all the years we've been crossing back and forth.
I guess it depends on where you cross. This is covered in the "Anything to declare?" question I get asked every time I cross. But, I do cross at the same crossing every time.
We get the 'anything to declare' question just about every time but never anything about what we are leaving there.

Don't take this as anything but a question, but, if not about what you're leaving there, just what exactly do you think they're asking about when they say 'Do you have anything to declare?'.
As for the OP, unless you can sell the unit privately to someone else, it needs to leave the US.
I went through this helping friends of the family, they'd gone south for the winter, had health issues, flew home and passed away. Widow wasn't able to move the unit herself.
