San Antonio Texas

Going to spend a few days next week in San Antonio Texas. Other than the Alamo and the River Walk, anything else there that we should not miss?
  • Per campinginthevwoods make sure you visit Johnson’s federal and state parks, Johnson musieum in Johnson city also interesting and of course how can one miss visiting, Lukenback,Texas. These require visiting Fredericksburg which is just down the road from SanAntonio.
  • The World War II musieum in Fredericksburg is also very interesting, but to see all of it will take 2 days. You could probably spend two weeks in SanAntonio / Fredericksburg area.
  • You did say San Antonio, and Fredericksburg is 70 miles away. But if you have any interest in World War II history, I agree with above that a visit to the National Museum of the Pacific War is worthwhile. And Fredericksburg itself is an interesting town with all its German history and architecture. And shopping galore. And extensive winery tours if you like that.

A person could spend days just touring the hill country towns of Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Boerne (pronounced bernie), Comfort, Bandera (“cowboy capital of the world”), and many others each with their own personality.
  • Lots of great ideas. So, I will add great golf on the Alamo City Golf Trail courses and other public courses. And long and nice bicycle paths especially along the Mission Reach that follows the San Antonio River south from near downtown to several missions. Have a great trip!

Rudy's is good BBQ but I like Coopers BBQ better. New Braunfels downtown area is full of interesting things to see and do.

Rudy's is fine. I eat there myself, but given a choice, which you have in New Braunfels since they are right down the street from each other, I choose Cooper's. The original Cooper's in Llano, TX is even better.

If you do make your way up to New Braunfels, I highly recommend Naegelin's Bakery, a German bakery that is the oldest in Texas. Get there early since they sell out of a lot of stuff.
  • Not a fan of Coopers. More like Carolina BBQ than Texas in my opinion. Rudy’s is fine for me.

But to each their own. Lots of great BBQ in Texas.

Do visit the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. It does not include the overly commercialized Alamo, It features four missions in much more original settings, well presented and easy to visit one, two or all four.
  • Just got back from San Antonio. Thanks for all the input here!
Must say that I always thought of San Antonio as just another Texas cowtown. Far from it! Could spend a few weeks there seeing all there is to see.
The 5 or 6 interstates which meet there suck. On and off ramps are short and signage leaves much to be desired when you're dragging 40ft of TH behind you. To get to downtown from the KOA, Houston street will take you there with much less stress, lol.
Even got to take the motorcycle for a ride out into the country side. Nice. Love the German influence on the architecture on the farm houses, churches, etc.
