That's a lot of territory to cover! A few spots, in rather random order, that you may want to make sure to see:
Indiana - Turkey Run State Park. This place is VERY popular, has a large CG but you WILL need reservations to stay there because so many people love it. The trails are wonderful, and truly unique, as is the experience of paddling & dragging a rented canoe or kayak down Sugar Creek (the company drops you off & picks you up.) Fun place.
Pennsylvania: Gettysburg - a MUST-see if you have not been there before. Very special place.
Bethlehem - lots of history. Not too familiar with CGs in this area as we always stayed with my parents when we visited. :) Not on everyone's radar.
CG along the Delaware River, just south of the Poconos: Driftstone on the Delaware. Reservations recommended. Neat spot, especially the HUGE back-in sites along the river, close to the office.
Rhode Island: Fishermen's Memorial State Park - decent CG. Newport is quite amazing to tour.
North Carolina: Do NOT miss the Biltmore estate near Asheville. Spend a whole day - you can do a self-guided audio tour. This place will knock your socks off (and is a great educational experience.)
Connecticut: Mystic Seaport, also worth a whole day. Great atmosphere & lots to see & learn about whaling and its importance to early New England.
Michigan - Aune-Osborn CG in Sault Ste Marie. It's county or city-run, not much to look at, but the view of lake freighters, close-up, is amazing.
Mackinac Island - do not miss it! Day trip via ferry from either the upper or lower peninsula.
Speaking of peninsula, a great way to cross Michigan is on US2 across the U.P. Also across Wisconsin & Minnesota, from what I hear.
Great state parks in the upper Midwest (MI & WI) and in Ohio. Many sites will have electric hookups. Lots of woods & well-spaced sites in many of these. They are reservable, some up to 11 months in advance, and are popular; reservations needed on weekends in the majority of them.
Hope this gives you something to start with!
