Looks like you'll be in Michigan in the UP when you visit Sault Ste Marie?
I agree with the previous poster to take a day to visit Mackinac Island. You take a ferry over from St. Ignace. You can get a package deal that includes prices for the ferry to/from the island, self guided tour of Fort Mackinac, and a horse drawn wagon ride around the entire island. This is my preferred way to see the island. You can also rent bikes, but be cautioned that it's very hilly!
There are tons of threads here on the UP, but I'd recommend you visit the Soo locks, WhiteFish Point (beach, lighthouse tours and museum) on Lake Superior, Tahquamenon Falls, and stop in Munising for a tour of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. See this from the water on a boat tour. It's beautiful.
