Our trip was great for the first 200 miles when smoke led to this...

We were lucky! We'd had transmission serviced and took off. I checked to make sure there was tranny fluid on the dip stick before we left, but I didn't go through the full "drive it 20 miles to fully heat up the fluid" procedure which if I had would have found that the shop severely overfilled the transmission. I paid the "stupid tax" for that little blunder.
4 hours later waiting for the wrecker, and after the tow to Ridgecrest Ford dealer, it was determined that we were lucky, no damage, and transmission had "burped" the excess fluid on the slight grade towing the Jeep in 100+ temps. They washed the underside of RV, test drove it, and gave us a good to go... all in just an hour and a half at the dealer.
It was 5:30 PM, we were tried and hungry, so we hit a Mexican place the tow driver recommended and headed over to the fairgrounds RV park. Not fancy, dirt lot, but glad it was as an asphalt lot would have been much hotter... it was 106 when we found our pull through site.

Next morning we're off on the "long and winding road to Sequoia", Nine Mile Canyon Road and beyond...

We stopped here for the "information center"... there was no information we could find other than a nice relief map of the area. Cute sign though...

Since our plans got off to a poor start, we decided to stay at USFS campgrounds and our second night found us at Quaking Aspen in Sequoia National Forest. It was pretty typical with posted prices up to $43 for a two vehicle site. The fee tube had no envelopes, and the sign on the Iron Ranger said a uniformed attendant (concession operator) would be by to collect our fee.

Next morning, we were ready to leave, nobody had been by to collect the fee, so we left and didn't feel bad about a free night.
