The bottom line to all of this is that the US is a foreign country that has many things in common with most of Canada. You can not expect it to be a retirement host country that will have an even exchange rate forever. Your dollar is not shrinking (from my view point,) the US dollar is just getting stronger.
Five years ago the US was on the cusp of the worst recession ever. Many foreigners (not just Canadians) took advantage of the low costs of things due to our weak dollar. Many bought hard assets which they can sell now for a profit. Much of the best deals went to those with a strong dollar. Just the way of the world.
