Signal Mountain or Gros Ventre Campground?

Gros Ventre. Never fills except July 4th. Well spaced sited. Treed if you want. Open if you want. Cool at night so the A/C is no miss. Might even get a moose or bear stroll through.

Colter Bay RV Park is the one that is full. It has 112 sites and takes reservations. The Colter Bay campground has over 300 and it does not take reservations but it is dry camping only. Dry camping only at Gros Ventre.

Another option in the GTNP is Flagg Ranch now called Headwaters. They have a campground with hookups. I've heard good and bad and have stayed there and it was fine for us. We've also stayed further away at Baker's Hole NFS CG 2 mies north of West Yellowstone. Most sites have electricity and there is a water fill station as you enter. Another place we've stayed is off the Togwotee Pass at Falls NFS CG. One loop has electricity and longer, wider sites for RV's. It's a bit of a drive but still do-able.

Depends on what a person wants to do/see in GTNP, and how much driving (and in what vehicle, e.g., I don't tow; any and all travel is in the "C".) they want to get to wherever.

Signal Mountain is a much more "central" location (on Jackson Lake), but, as has been mentioned, the sites are small and access can be difficult with a larger rig, and the campground usually fills quickly.

Gros Ventre, at the far south end of the park, is closer to Jackson, and it seldom fills due to its size (350 sites) and distance from what many consider the "center" of the park.

Anywhere you find a spot will be lovely; GTNP is a magical place.

We like Gros Ventre as opposed to Colter Bay campground (different from Colter
Bay RV). We like a more open feel rather than being closed in by trees. Gros Ventre gives us that. It's also closer to Jackson if you want to do anything in town. Neither one accepts reservations and they have 300 sites so in June you should have no problems.

We always stay at Gros Ventre when in Grand Teton. Been going there off and on since the mid 1970's. Last June we decided to drive through Signal Mountain campground to see if we might want to stay there. Quickly decided it wasn't for us. Sites were very tight and most were way off level. There were a few sites with views of the lake that were nice and level, but of course they were occupied.

Gros Ventre is more spacious, all sites are level and no worries about getting a site. In early June they will be way less than 1/2 filled each day.

We are planning on 3rd week in June for GTNP, Colter Bay is booked for the days we are planning at this time. We have not stayed there except for tents way back in the -- well many decades ago. We now have a 30' fiver so we had wanted to make sure we had a reservation. I will keep calling to see if something opens up, other wise we will just look around when we get there. Should be fun!

We stayed at Gros Ventre last June when we couldn't get into Colter Bay. I really like Colter Bay better as it is a much prettier campground being close to the lake and having a great view of the mountains. Gros Ventre was fine and we had a couple of moose wandering around our campground one evening which was neat. Also, we took a trip up to Slide Lake and saw a herd of Mountain Sheep up there. However, it's about 30-35 minutes from Gros Ventre to Jackson Lake and we fish up there so it was a little inconvenient as we take the boat out every night and launch in the morning so we had to trailer the boat each day. Cost of both campgrounds will be the same and they both accept the Senior Pass so it's probably going to be about $12 a day this year. Both campgrounds have some places with electricity for handicapped campers but no FHU. The electric spots at Colter Bay may be able to be used by non-handicapped folks as they save a number of them for handicapped, but release them, I believe, later in the day. Also, at Colter Bay, you are in the middle of the park as opposed to the lower side at Gros Ventre. As far as Signal Mountain, it's a beautiful campground, but, as noted above, usually for smaller camper outfits. Pretty tight even just driving around, but nice and close to the lake and all that beautiful scenery. I'm probably a little biased as we have been camping at Colter Bay for about 50 years, in tents, campers, and FWs. Wherever you decide to go, you will have a wonderful experience.

Could depend on your rig size too. Signal Mountain is smaller and tighter whereas GV has a lot of wide spots for most size rigs. The nice thing about GV is that there are a lot a moose there.
