If you are going to enjoy the mountains, and not for shopping, Townsend is the place for you. We have been going there almost every year since 1972. For a suggestion, drive the loop at Cades Cove, then start around for a second trip. This time turn right on Rich Mountain Road. This is a beautiful drive back to Townsend. We have seen bear on this drive many times.
I have considered this drive (the Rich Mtn. Road to Townsend segment) many times, but always talked myself out of it. I believe it is a one-way road, correct? Is it gravel most of the way, and would it be safe with a 3/4 ton truck?
You can easily make it in the truck. I drove it with no issues in a PT Cruiser.
