Snowbirds In Limbo As Coronavirus Upends Travel Plans

It’s pretty rare to see news about Snowbirds outside of travel or RV oriented media, but the current coronavirus crisis has caused the political press to take note. Snowbirds In Limbo As Coronavirus Upends Travel Plans:
Retired Americans and Canadians who spend winters in the southern U.S. are stuck in limbo as the coronavirus pandemic has forced them to re-evaluate where to live the next few months.

The group, commonly known as snowbirds, is questioning whether it is safer to stay in their winter homes or head back north as travel restrictions from Florida to Canada go into effect.
Not much in the article that hasn’t been raised here before, but perhaps some awareness will be raised. More at link.

Less chance of getting sick at home? Better treatment? Some were going to lose emergency medical insurance.
  • For many, the options are few.
Campendium has been a decent resource for some. They maintain updated list of the closures, and have some (obvious in many cases) recommendations on their website. Campendium
The idea of Boondocking is mentioned, as well as selecting a location near a larger town or small city to have access to healthcare.

  • I don't think any Canadian snowbirds would lose their government supplied coverage, under these circumstances (out of province coverage is already next to nothing, anyway), but some supplemental plans probably have maximum out of province time limits. For some provinces it's 6 months, some are 7. Individual supplemental plans probably/may follow those guidelines.
