South Fork is a great place if your priorities are enjoying the surrounding mountains, forest, rivers, lakes. Lots of great boondocking, hiking, fishing, rafting, ATV'ing, off road Jeep'ing, etc.
If your enjoyment depends on being near lots of stores, shops, commercial "attractions" and lots of other people, then its probably not the place for you.
We have at least 6 commercial campgrounds of various sizes (including 800 space Fun Valley), and 6 rustic Forest Service campgrounds, and unlimited "dispersed" camping off any of the 300 miles of Forest Service roads.
Probably 50% of the commercial campground spaces are rented for the whole summer season by folks who return every year.
80% of the homes here are owned by summer only residents.
The permanent all year or winter population is about 600, the summer population is about 3,000, or 5,000 if you include all nearby campers.
The summer weather is perfect by most standards, sunny clear warm days & cool overnight, with no humidity and little rain.
I live here in the summers.
Sounds like my sort of place. I like the fact that it is sort of lightly inhabited, has a good River, is surrounded by some great road trips and is still only a half day from Denver (Granddaughter's) might try a road trip when we are in Vail in a couple of weeks.
Are there any old mines or other off road places that people tend to seek? Any really Special Secret places,
Thanks to all,
