South Fork is a great place to visit. We stayed there a few years ago at South Fork Campground, a nice campground just east of "downtown". Nice shady sites with some right on the river. Friendly management.
There's lots of things to do around there, especially if you like touring the back country. Creede, Lake City, Pagosa Springs and Wolfe Creek Gap are all easy sightseeing trips and worth the drive. The Rio Grande National Forest is adjacent to the town, and has lots of good national forest roads to explore. The roads are good and easily drivable with most vehicles. Some of the greatest mountain views anywhere!
