Southern Lousiana (along Route 90)

In Kaplan there is a little hole in the wall place called Suires try their Turtle in sauce piquant. Lots of other Cajun specialties and they have most of it frozen to go as well.
They cater to the locals

My wife and I enjoy southern La. Sounds like you have had some great input so far. Abbeville would be a good choice .Much better road from Abbeville to New Iberia than Lafayette to New Iberia. That's a bad one. Victors Cafeteria in downtown New Iberia is great. Shadows on the Teche is a interesting plantation home in New Iberia. If Bayou Signette is booked check out St.Bernard state park. Its about 20 minutes from the Quarter. Nice park also. Enjoy some great cooking and hospitality while your there. We have heard lot's about Betty's RV park but have tried it yet. Sounds Fun !

I can only speak from our experiences. Avery Island, the home of Tabasco and a decent plant tour and gift shop. Palmetto Island State park to us was fabulous. We were a bit off season and the park was mostly empty. Loved it. Ate at Shucks in Abbeville and had great food and entertainment as the owner spotted us as tourist and gave us his personal run-down of the local fare.
Davis Bayou is slightly east of Biloxi and a nice COE park, for what it's worth.

If you take LA 82 to Abbeville, plan to stop at Betty's RV Park in Abbeville. Betty's is a small park run by Betty Bernard. Stopping there is a unique experience - - lots of fun at the 4:00 P.M. social hours hosted by Betty. Sometimes the social hours go on for many hours! Check it out: http://bettysrvpark.com/

WHy not just go to Galveston and take the Ferry to Bolivar peninsula. Spend a day or 4 on the beach. Then go up through Winnie and over to Port Arthur then take Louisiana 82 along the coast. In Abbeville take US 167 north to I10

This might be a good route, I am not sure about hte condition of Hwy 82, as I have not driven it in some years. I know Hwy 14 is very narrow in some places, but I think those are mostly west of Kaplan.

I would call the camp grounds, The recent Hurricane and the water it dumped, may have displaced home owners, plus brought in tons of helping folks. Also I hope you have a place to camp in Biloxi, as you may be heading into the " Cruisin' the Coast" crowd along the Mississippi coast. Finally I highly recommend you stop at "Bacchus On The Beach, Pass Christian" and enjoy the view, the drinks, the outside deck, and the Oysters on the half shell, grilled of course.

Since you have a lot of time, why not take an alternate route? In Winnie, TX take Hwy 73 to Port Arthur, then take Hwy 82 all the way to Kaplan, LA, then take Hwy 14 through Abbeville to New Iberia, now you can get on Hwy 90. You can find campgrounds in Abbeville, New Iberia and Morgan City.

First be aware that industry is booming (well sort of) in SW Louisiana (mostly Lake Charles, West Lake, Sulphur, ..) so most of the camp grounds in the area are full of contract workers. Therefore I would suggest spending time in the New Iberia areas, perhaps Rip Van Winkle Gardens at Jefferson Island, Avery Island, If you like regional home cooked food I would suggest Palmetto Island State park (it is a fairly new small state park) if you can get there on a on the right Saturday once per month the local dutch oven cooking club does a cooking demonstration with samples (more like pot luck lunch) donations accepted, and raffle tickets are also sold. A quick check of their facebook page says the next event is Oct 14th. We were there last Feb and they had about 50 dutch ovens worth of mostly cajun food, or at least cajun influenced food, plus gumbo and dirty rice. If you do go there approach from the east or north east the roads coming in from the west are very rough (shakes things loose like headlights, rough).


If you happen to be hungry when passing through Sulphur I would suggest trying Holier's good cajun food at a fair price, the buffer is of, but best stuff is ordered off the menu. They have 2 locations, with reasonable chance to have room to park RV's at either one, the original location on Ruth St, has a gravel parking lot next door that you may find room in, the new location on City Services Hwy is in front of an old K-Mart store that has since been converted to mini storage. Both location are just a block or two north of I-10, so should be right off your route. Once you get down south of Lafayette finding good places to get cajun food gets a lot easier, just one that comes to mind is Landry's Cajun Seafood in New Iberia (no relation to the fake cajun national chain) unfortunately their parking lot is not RV friendly due to overhanging limbs at the entrance.
