Park in Deming, NM and do day trips to City of Rocks State Park, Rock Hound State Park, Poncho Villa State Park near Columbus, NM, Chino Mine near Silver City and Gila Cliff Dwelling National Monument. In September the Chile Festival is in Hatch, NM and even if you miss the festival you can buy fresh green or red chile all over the Mesilla Valley and southern Rio Grande. Leasburg Dam State Park/Fort Seldon Monument has E/W hookups about 25 mi south of Hatch and 15 mi north of Las Cruces. While near White Sands Missile Range (on US 70 between Las Cruces and Alamagordo) see the Missile Museum. You can park at the gate and walk the 100 yards to the museum.
If you like hiking there is also the Prehistoric Trackways National Monument just North and West of Las Cruces with newly discovered petrified forest rocks and fossilized footprints with hiking trails and no vehicle access.
Almost forgot to mention the Jornada De Muerto drive from Exit 32 on I-25 to Upham and then up to Engle near Truth or Consequences and Elephant Butte Lake. A good days jeep outing about 50 miles. Take water and snacks.
