Just west of Amarillo on I40 is Cadillac Ranch where the guy PLANTED some Caddy's in the ground. Take spray paint because "tagging" the cars is encouraged.
While not near your route the detour to Canyon de Chelly is extraordinary. It is said by many to be "better" than the Grand Canyon.
There is a hot air balloon event Feb 7-8 in Albuquerque up to 135 balloons scheduled.
Old route 66 through Arizona
Oatman Arizona just southwest of Kingman is an old mining town that was abandoned and then repopulated in the 60's by "hippys" When the miners abandoned the area they left behind mules that come down out of the mountains and in to town daily. They are tame enough to feed (bring carrots). Most of the buildings are original and there are reenactments daily. Gold mining still takes place in the area.
Lots of artesians in the area making everything from pottery to wrought iron.
Oatman is on original Route 66 before the first realignment.
