Well! If the kids really DON'T care, I vote for the Smokey Mountains, Ashville, Cherokee NC location also, especially during spring break! The farther from the ocean, the better! Maybe I'm getting to old and out of touch with what younger kids like these day, but we absolutely love the Western NC, and Northern SC area! It's a fabulous area! Lots of things to do, but not so sure teenagers would appreciate it as much. Kids always love amusement parks, water parks, arcades, and movie theaters. Not so sure they would be as thrilled about seeing a rock that's suppose to be 1 million years old behind a glass wall though.
Active historical villages are always a win though! Especially if they have activities for kids to do, hands-on.
Edit! But now that you have mentioned your wife's desire ... well ... that settles it! You've got no choice now. Remember, .... happy wife, happy life! Looks like you're going to SC! Good luck there guy!

When we went to Panama City, Florida a couple years ago over spring break, we didn't realize all the craziness that goes on during spirng break and didn't even think about spring break since we don't have kids in school any more. We made reservations almost a year ahead and then got one of the last sites still open. When we finally went, we were horrified at all the traffic, people, and craziness that went on. The campground was nice and quiet. We ended up sight seeing and visiting other areas in Florida than Panama City, and just returned there to sleep. It was that crazy. We learned the hard way.
