Springtime In The Rockies

We visit A Basis once in August and they were still skiing.

Going to RMMP in a couple of weeks,sounds like I better pack my snow boots. We were in Yellowstone
in June once when it snowed 9 inches, we still went hiking!

A-Basin ski area announced they would stay open until at least June, with a current 84in base, and may even stay open until July!

I can't resist adding that my daughter and I did ski at A-Basin in July. Snow was only at the higher lifts and at the lower lifts we had to walk on boardwalks and ride up over mud. It is a great memory.

I am not hearing much from my friends in Estes about the weather !

But soooooooooo good there is some and this will mean great water levels as long as the runoff is gradual.

Drove by Boyd Lake a month ago and the water level looks fantastic already!

Well the snow has come and gone. As has the cold. Near record lows last night in some places. Down here in the lower elevations, pretty much a non-event. While it snowed starting Saturday night and finished up yesterday afternoon, not much in the way of accumulation, at least not here in northern Colorado around Loveland, Fort Collins, and Greeley. But...we are all right around 4500-5000 elevation. Add another thousand feet, and it was different. Add a couple thousand feet more, and more of a difference! Estes Park got more than 10in, Nederland got around a foot, Red Feather Lakes area got around 20in, and some of the higher elevations got amounts of 2 to 3 feet of new snow! With a rapid warming trend in store for us this week into next, there's the concern about flooding as the snow melts and the creeks/rivers rise. Already, water companies are starting to draw off those creeks/rivers and fill reservoirs down here. Boyd Lake soon to be full, it's been rising steadily the past week or so at least noticeable rise. Heading up to Estes Park to RMNP next weekend, hopefully won't have too much snow in Moraine Park!

Rock Cut is one of my favorite places - along with Forest Canyon Overlook.

DW and I were hiking once from Milner Pass up to the Alpine VC and back - we loved that hike. Seems like a sleet storm came up while we were having our coffee at the AVC so we had to do the 4 miles back down in that. (We were already part way down when it started). Wife packed her Gortex; I did not. She has fun reminding me of that on occasion. :-)

Point is - can't rely on the weather in the mountains.

Yup, I've been up on Trail Ridge in both July and August and run in to snow squalls up there. They seem to really like the area around the Alpine Visitors Center and up to the Rock Cut!

I'm ready for all this to be over with...how 'bout sending some of that good ol' Arizona Heat up this way??? :-)

Oh dear, too bad. Lived in Estes 8 years so kinda know how that can happen. Guess I will have to remind my friends back there why we moved to Arizona! :-)

I remember one year we had a golf match with the men's club in Grand Lake the middle of July and Trail Ridge was closed due to snow / sleet!
