Stillwell Store and RV Park in Texas
Anybody stayed at this RV park recently? I found some older comments, but nothing recent. Can't even find it on the Good Sam site when I hunt for campgrounds through the trip planner. We're thinking o...

We drove by there on July 2014 and talked to them.
There are two sections - the FHU section on the west side of the road next to the store. We walked in the restrooms, looked okay. There is no shade and it is really hot most of the year. The folks were friendly.
Across the road is a larger area with only RV parking.
Their primary customers are hunters, many who have toy haulers, atvs and generators. The Black Gap WMA has hunts several times each year.
As far as "border safety" - it is fine. CBP from Big Bend patrols regularly. (yes several CBP officers live at the park HQ and patrol the park and surrounding area)
The location is about as far from any normal visitor part of Big Bend as Maverick Ranch in Lajitas.
It is a 45-60 minute drive from the Persimmon Gap park north entrance to the mountain hiking trails, Rio Grande River canyons, Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. There are no restaurants within an hour drive of the Stillwell location.
Staying in Study Butte, Terlingua or Lajitas would offer restaurants, fuel and small stores.
But as mentioned above, if you want FHU, the concessionaire run parking lot campground within the park at Rio Grande Village is much more convenient and certainly won't cost more, especially when you figure in the cost of fuel.
I would stay there if there was no other option in the park or the west side. Nothing wrong with the place, just located in the 'wrong' place as far as I'm concerned.
