Having lived in Florida (FT Myers), and spent time in the Tampa area (USF), I must inform you that public transportation in not to be counted on; it is designed for workers, not tourists, so does not go where you want to. Ringling and Edison are excellent suggestions; St. Armand's Key, Ding Darling (Sanibel), and several colleges and museums should also make the list. But a rental van is a must!
