Suggestions on FL west coast campgrounds

Looking for nice campgrounds in FL gulf side from Spring Hill down. We are first time RV''ing since last year and learning the ropes of the retiree life! Yipee!
We missed Jan and Feb as snowbirds this year but would like to go somewhere south now for a couple weeks or months and plan for next year also so open to ideas!

  • Thanks everyone for all the good campground referrals. We are researching all of them, if not for immediate travel we can use them for future travels. It is looking a little difficult for availability in many of them right away! We are thinking of driving down next week in our van and jump around to the whole area before bringing the RV down so we will be familiar with locations and accessibility for a 42 foot RV!
Bring that warm weather back down there!!! Many thanks again!

You were looking for Spring Hill and south...Williston Crossing is about 80 miles North of Spring Hill.
Ft Desoto as mentioned is nice, Hillsborough River State park would work. If you are about 35' or shorter, Turtle Beach in Sarasota is nice and right on the beach. A bit inland is Venice Campground on the Myakka River. We also like Button Wood as previously suggested. Hillsborough County also has 3 county parks with RV camping. Meddard is on a lake ( reclaimed phosphate mine) Lithia Springs is on the Alafia River, Simmons is on Tampa Bay. Sounds like you are wanting to come down now... it will be tough getting into most places
  • If Fort De Soto fits the schedule, go. Great park, great beach.
  • Rock Crusher Canyon in Crystal River is just a short jump North of SpringHill!
  • X3 for Williston Crosssing It is really a nice park and not far from Gainsville or Ocala for more things to do. Check their website for specials.
  • Buttonwood Inlet RV park in Cortez, Fl. It is literally right outside of Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island. Nice walk or bike ride across a draw bridge to the island. 30 minutes from Sarasota, 40 minutes from Tampa.

Anna Maria Island is a GORGEOUS little island with nice shops, tons of great beaches, hiker/biker paths, boats and restaurants.
  • x2 for Williston Crosssing - tell them you are first timers - I think they have a special for those who have not stayed there before. It is really a nice park and not far from Gainsville for more things to do. Check their website for specials.

Rock Crusher Canyon at Crystal River is also very nice. Don't let the name put you off.
It is a nice park; usually hard to get into, but might work for your time frame.
  • Fort Desoto in St Petersburg.
More inland, Hillsborough River State Park.
In Brooksville: Belle Parc RV Park. Recently renoved. Some really nice sites.
A bit farther north in Dunnellon we like Rainbow Springs State Park.
and in Williston we like Williston Crossings.
