We rented a car in Melbourne and stayed in Australia for 2 months ending in Cairns. We loved Sydney but after our arrival, we never got in the car for 9 days except for a one day trip to Bondi Beach. We stayed in an apartment very close to a bus stop and took public transportation. There is so much to see and do in the harbor area that you can at least take three days for that area alone. The ferry transportation is wonderful. I would only rent the car for the days you actually need it, not for the entire time.
