Syracuse Campgrounds

Try Verona state park on the shores of Oneida Lake. There's also Sylvan Beach; there are a couple of private campgrounds in the area. reasonable drive time to med. schools

There is nothing close with full hookups. Verona State Park has no hookups. Some of the campgrounds around Sylvan Beach might work, but it might be an interesting drive to get to them.

If you extend your range, you will probably be happy staying at Turning Stone in Verona. We stayed there last year to visit family. It wouldn't be too bad a drive to SU, since there is no way you will be taking the 5er up on the hill anyway.

Green Lakes State Park

You could try River Forest in Weedsport. Mostly caters to seasonal but transient's are welcome. I would not advise a river front site due to mosquito's. Just about 30 minutes maybe a bit longer. A little bit further west is Hejamada in Montezuma, 40 minutes or a bit more.
Lighthouse landing in Marathon. I have never been there but it is also 30 to 40 minutes south of Syracuse. Marathon is on I 81 and Rt 11 so it is a direct shot to the university.

Thanks for the suggestions! Great Lakes State park is not available, but I found Otisco Lake Campground in Marietta. It is about 25 miles south west of Syracuse. Anyone ever been there? I can't find any reviews on it.

Green Lakes State Park has no water or sewer. We wound up at the Turning Stone park in Verona. Absolutely one of the best campgrounds we've every seen! Nearby Oneida Casino has great food. Nothing worth mentioning closer to Syracuse.

The route to Otisco might be a little snug with a 40' 5w, and it's not any closer than Turning Stone would be from SU. Never stayed at that campground on Oticso but I know the area - very nice, quaint little area of the Finger Lakes and close to the wineries if that's your thing. Turning Stone is an easy trip comparatively - from SU proper it's 30-40 minutes. You're on the Thruway about 20 minutes. The Stone has a nice steakhouse, phenomenal golf course, and (of course) the casino. The rv park is top notch. For ease of getting there and back I'd go Turning Stone. If you want more out of the way, Oticso Lake is nice.

Outside of that, it's slim pickens for full hookup campgrounds that close to Syracuse. There's a Jellystone in Mexico with some full hookups but it's all of 45 minutes from SU and you'll be tight with a 40'. Everything else is an hour +.

I may be wrong,but I think the fairgrounds only allows event camping. Not a place I would voluntarily stay anyway.

Turning Stone is by far the best bet. The trip is the easiest, because of the Thruway and the accommodations are great.
We stayed at the place in Weedsport, overnight, on our way to Niagara Falls. It was dreadful - never been back and never will be.
