Ours is gravity drained and the temp set at 48°. I do not drain the water heater, as it is next to the furnace and stays warmer than the house. I also do not use any anti freeze or blow out, just turn off the water main in the house. It has survived -30° and more than 15 consecutive days of sub zero weather, so I think all is fine.
