Best thing to do is get a remote temperature transmitter and put it either at your drain valves, or your outside shower head. Both places are the most prone to failure in most rigs.
That way it's not a guessing game.
If you are leaving a running furnace, then you need power to the rig. Might be better off to use electricity. I used to use battery wrap heat tapes near the valves.
