My parents used to never drop the temp more than 55F when traveling south for the winter. One year they decided for somereason to drop and hold the temp at 45F. We soon realized why people recomend not doing so. We are from just outside of Ottawa and the humidity is moderate I would say, but drop the temp and air gets dry. This is where I think the problem started with the haed wood floor in the house. Many cracks between boards and altough we thought they would close back up in the warmer spring and summer months they did not all and a refinish was needed.
So this is just my 2 cents from our experiences as to why not to drop the temp to far. Founded? I think so... just can`t think of another reson as to why this would have happened. the only difference from any other year was the temp in the house.
