Texas Hill Country

Planing a trip to the Texas Hill country in the spring to view wild flowers. When is the best week or two for flower viewing and where is the best area? I prefer some area near San Antonio.

  • Was going to add the Willow City Loop and glad "timandsusan" beat me to it. Outstanding drive at any time but "over-the-top" in the spring. About 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Highway 16 and a bit east on Highway 1323. Follow the signs from there. Be aware this is a private road and we are guests there. No stopping and watch for cattle on the road. Also, watch for cattle grates in the road. Not an issue, just go slow.

Also, Highway 16 between Fredericksburg and Llano, Park Road 4 between Highway 29 and Highway 281 (passing Inks Lake State Park and Longhorn Caverns) and anywhere on 281 between Hico and San Antonio are likely to yield outstanding views of bluebonnets and other wildflowers.

    Enjoy and Happy Camping!
  • We found a KOA just out of Austin, lots of room, great staff, very clean, I look forward to my next visit to the Texas Hill Country and the KOA Campground.JH
  • I recommend staying in or near Fredericksburg--expect crowds even during the weekdays. Don't miss the Willow City Loop--check in the Fredericksburg Visitors Center for maps of other country roads.
Dates are a tough call. Basically the wild flowers start blooming near the coast as the weather warms and then reaches all the way to Oklahoma eventually. Since I live in San Antonio--I plant wildflower seeds in October and watch what they do. So far my bluebonnets are doing great as are poppies and about 25 other varieties. Check to see if the Fred Visitors Center has a website with updates on wild flowers in the area.
  • Blanco Settlement is a good place to stay for the flowers and color. It is quite and close to lots of attractions. About 3 miles out of Blanco, Texas. Check it out , it may be what you are looking for.
  • Second week in April through second week in May, +/- one week. I would suggest Inks Lake SP (always do) but Guadalupe SP is closer to San Antonio and also very nice. Both are very close to Hwy 281 and gives you great access to all areas of the Hill Country. No matter where you want to end up, get your reservations soon! Hill Country parks fill up fast in the spring.

Short on time at this moment. Will look at this thread later and will be pleased to answer any other questions I can.

    Happy Camping!
  • I can't really comment on the best week, just wanted to say if you do the hill country don't miss Fredericksburg, if you have any interest in WW2 you could spend 2 days or more in the War in the Pacific museum.
