Iam on the road....stayed in a Texas State park in N Texas.....It was fairly run down and unkept compared to fed parks.....but the real kicker was the cost......$5.00 /each/per day entrance plus $16....

Love, love, love Texas State Parks. It is a government entity, you get what you pay for. No state taxes in Texas.
Living in Eastern Mexico, if we want to travel in the U.S., Texas is on the map. I have a list of my favorites. Want to hear them? Good. Here they are:
Galveston
Goose Island
Seminole Canyon
Balmorhea
Franklin
Big Bend Ranch
Fort Davis
Lake Casa Blanca
Mustang Island
Choke Canyon
Hueco Tanks
Ex-Bentson Rio Grande now a birding center (arghhhh)
Now for the downside. As well-stated by most is the day use fee. I shouldn't have to buy a pass. People make it sound like the pass is a real deal. If I'm paying for FHU site I shouldn't have to pay for day use also. That is price gouging.
We are cleaners too. Wherever we go, we each carry a grocery bag and fill it with trash. Imagine, if everyone did that, we wouldn't have trashy anything. JMHO
