Texas winter camping

Hi All,
We are planning an 18 day trip this year leaving just before Christmas and we'll be heading thru south tx, nm, and az. We have done florida plenty of times in the winter and know it can be a little difficult to find nice campgrounds on the fly with no reservations. Does the same hold true in the winter for the areas I mentioned or can we just wing it like we like to do without worrying. We travel in a truck camper towing a jeep so the good thing is we can usually squeeze into some small campround spots that other larger rig can't fit. Also do some campgrounds have an issue with truck campers in those regions? A few times in Florida we were told no truck campers allowed at some parks for whatever reason.
Thanks, Sticky

  • We traveled thru lower AZ and New Mexico just after Christmas on our way to California and had snow.
  • Personally, I'd rethink your 18 day trip from New Jersey to Arizona. Are you retired? Can't you add more time?

Also, New Mexico is usually too cold by the end of December.
  • Except in the few over populated places where folks tend to stay in the same place all winter, you should have no problem finding places to stay for a few nights while passing through. It may not always be your first choice, but there will be plenty of choices in most spots.

  • I see a number of new parks along state roads in TX. We go to south Texas to the Rio Grand Valley. Lot of THINGS going on all along the Valley and is the warmest place. Paul
  • Having been in all 3 States over the last 15 years, I have never not found an RV park to stay in except around a large city such as DFW or Phoenix. But the suburbs always have an RV with room. It may take a few phone calls though.
  • We been going and staying in the RGV for over 20 years. Most parks never get all the way full at any time. If one is full the next one will have room. Many are getting older but most are well kept up. We have stayed at Alamo Rec. the last few years. You can get on line and check most of them out. Paul
  • You should be OK at that time of year. Most RV Parks are not filled up until after Christmas.
