If your boys are 12 now, it would be great to see the historic sites. A lot don't require going into cities, like Jamestown, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Gettysburg.

Cherry Hill park just outside DC makes it easier than you might expect to see the Washington.

Then you could swing west to Shenandoah NP and down to Great Smoky Mountain National Park.
